Therapeutic Massage
Do your muscles ache from an injury? Do you suffer from muscle spasms, tension headaches or painful knots?
When a patient comes to our office with symptoms like headaches, neck/upper back tightness, hip soreness, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, shoulder pain (rotator cuff), plantar fasciitis or tennis elbow; they usually have one thing in common: Short, tight , ropey overused muscles. This is usually caused when the muscle is slightly injured by some type of trauma or by repetitive motion such as extended computer work.
When a muscle is overworked, it stays “on” all the time. It’s like a light bulb that stays on even when you switch it off. It is continuously contracted and working even when it should be at rest. Over time the body handles this situation by laying down a less elastic, second grade, poorly vascularized type of tissue called scar. Scar tissue or “adhesions” form within damaged overworked muscles or wherever damage and inflammation have occurred. Scar tissue prevents fluid motion of muscles, tendons, and ligaments and produces pain. Left untreated, it can prevent proper motion of the spinal joints causing abnormal wear and tear and premature arthritis.
Dr. Cooley and his team of professional massage therapists specialize in deep tissue and trigger point therapy bodywork. Our clinical muscle treatments are treated with either a specific, hands on approach or with the use of stainless steel instruments called Graston tools. Dr. Cooley is one of few chiropractors in the Sacramento region with postgraduate certification in Graston technique.
Graston is an instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization that breaks down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. The technique uses specially designed stainless steel instruments to specifically detect and treat areas with scar tissue or chronic inflammation.
Muscle release treatments are followed by instruction on proper stretching and strengthening of involved tissues.
